A Naval Flight Officer is a commissioned officer in the U.S. Navy or the U.S. Marine Corps that specializes in airborne weapons and sensor systems.
In terms of fighter airframes, there are two types of NFOs depicted in Top Gun and Top Gun: Maverick:
- Radar intercept officers flew in the rear of the F-14 Tomcat. In Top Gun, there were five characters that were RIOs: Goose, Merlin, Slider, Sundown and Wolfman.
- Weapon systems officers fly in the rear of the F/A-18D Hornet and the F/A-18F Super Hornet. In Top Gun: Maverick, WSOs include Bob and Fanboy.
