Cougar is the pilot in the opening scene of the movie that was so scared by the MiG that he couldn't land his plane. Maverick and Goose flew back to help him land. Just after landing, he quit the Navy. He was number one, and after he left, Maverick became number one and went onto Top Gun with Goose.
